Once again I got out to check out some Portland breweries during the annual Zwicklemania. This year I visited several breweries in downtown and North West. The route was Lucky Lab on Quimby to Deschutes Brewery in the Pearl to McMenamin Crystal Ballroom to Pints and over to Portland Brewing. I finished up by driving back to St. Johns and seeing Occidental Brewing. I picked up little bits of new information at each stop. First time I saw a brewing system using a separate Lauder. This was at Deschutes where they pack a lot of brewery in a small space.

the mash is moved to the lauder for separation from the wart and then through filter and a whirlpool for further separation. It is then moved back to the Mash tun that now works as the kettle.
At Deschutes everyone had a chance to sample the aroma difference between bittering and aromatic hops.
