I was over to Ben’s on Sunday for my first time brewing beer since college. Dick and Ben have been brewing beer for many years and have a pretty efficient process worked out. I mostly just watched and was not much help as these experience brewers went at it. We brewed a very hoppy pale ale mostly from extract but with milled barley for accent flavor. Ben used mostly hops he had grown himself. While I was there I had a chance to try a amber ale they had brewed earlier and it was excellent. It will be several weeks before this batch will be ready to drink but for me the it was an immediate appreciation for the home brewing process.
This is the special filter bottom Ben built for his kettle.
Cooling coil that will be used to quickly cool the wart after boiling.
Ben’s kettle set up using an old beer keg and a propane burner.
Ben and Dick adding the pale malt extract.
We just did a short half hour boil.
After the boil Ben and Dick work to cool the wort down. Ben uses a paint mixer on his drill to circulate the wort by the cooling coil and add oxygen to the wort.

Looking inside the kettle after the wart has been drained to the fermenter. Lot of hops in there.
The used hops go on the compost bin and flavoring barley malt will be used for a high fiber bread.
